Formerly I just want to create a sword with a lady figure on the guard; my first idea suppose to be angelic divine valkyrie-like sword. Then the idea morph and change till I start to put bat-wings and tail on it, hence the Dragon Lady. But I wanna make it more powerful so I named it Dragon Queen. Inspired by the Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt sword
First of I googled out some reference images of a witcher's long sword and loads of fantasy sword. Then I model a rough shape of the sword using spline extrude in 3Ds MAX. Finalized the concept by retopologizing it and GOZ in to Zbrush.
In Zbrush, I first masked the blade gold symbols by hand, inflate and mirror it X and Z. further reshaping and detailing. AS for the ladies on the guard, I used DAZ3D to create a lady model and pose her into a fetus position and throw export to zbrush to be merged. All the detail is crafted in Zbrush except the leather with gold embroidery handle which will be install later in texturing phase. I finish off the modelling by exporting to 3D Coat for low poly retopologizing and UV mapping.
Before I start texturing phase, I do a material ID cleanup in photoshop due to error detection in Quixel. As usual I install texture after texture on each different color ID that I made earlier except for the handle in which I done it differently. I wanted the pattern to wrap around the sword handle precisely and is difficult to do in Zbrush. So I search for an alpha pattern in google, place it in Quixel NDO to create a selection normal map on the handle and with that same selection, I installed a gold material and add leather on the rest of the handle.
