I got this one idea of giving the Elves a firearm; a lever action sniper rifle at that. I just sick of seeing elves use bow only theme.
First of I googled out some reference images of a winchester rifle, musket rifle that has those complex engraving and elven element ( like leaves, forest, trees, vines and animal related to the elven culture like stag and unicorn. model out the shape roughly in 3Ds Max using spline and extrude to them to get the rough idea.
Then I retopologized the extruded mesh and GOZ in to zbrush for further reshaping and detailing. Later I painstakingly mask out the details on the buttstock, body and barrel and inflate/deflate it in deformation. As for the hammer, I was contemplating wheather shud I use doe, stag or unicorn head. I decided to use unicorn for 2 reasons; first stag antler is too big and heavy for hammer and unicorn horn can bs serve as "iros sight". I google an alpha horse head, mask it on a plane, extrude and extract the head for polishing and add the horn separately. For extra, I added a locket as decor to give the gun some character. After finalizing it, I throw it into 3D coat for low poly retopology and UV map.
Finally I use Quixel DDO for retexturing. For the elven face on the locket, I googled a female and male elves, edit them in photoshop and make it brownish as though it is an old photograph
